Iceland Drilling has been selected to conduct a 5-well geothermal drilling campaign in Nevis as the island builds towards a 30-MW geothermal power development.

The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) has selected Iceland Drilling for a geothermal drilling campaign at the Hamilton site in Nevis. The announcement follows a competitive tender for the drilling contract, for which five companies from Europe and the US were initially shortlisted.

The contract is for the drilling of five geothermal wells – three for production, and two for reinjection. These will be part of a planned 30-MW geothermal power development which will supply both islands of St. Kitts and Nevis. The formal documents are expected to be signed in about a month for drilling to commence later this year.

Early exploration drilling had been done in Nevis back in 2018, serving to validate a geothermal resources of temperatures of around 200 °C. The imminent start of a multi-well drilling campaign is a good sign of progress for Nevis, a region which already had geothermal aspirations since the early 2000s.

The update was given by Premier of Nevis Hon. Mark Brantley during his monthly press conference before the end of January 2026. The Premier also mentioned that the government will soon be publishing a Request for Proposals and a draft Power Purchase Agreement for potential investors for the project.

St Kitts and Nevis is aspiring to follow the progress of Dominica, which is set to start the operations of its first geothermal power plant later this year. Interestingly, Iceland Drilling was also awarded the contract for the drilling of two geothermal wells in Dominica back in 2022.
