The Mexican Geothermal Association held its Congress in Puebla, gathering the sector to share technical and industry knowledge and recognize achievements.

The city of Puebla hosted the XXXII Annual Congress of the Mexican Geothermal Association (AGM), held from April 23 to 25, 2026, consolidating itself as the most important forum of the geothermal sector in Mexico.

The event brought together specialists, academics, companies, students and decision-makers from the energy sector, with the aim of exchanging knowledge and promoting the consolidation of geothermal energy within the national and regional energy matrix. With an approximate attendance of 120 registered delegates, the event featured active participation through keynote lectures, oral and technical presentations, and poster-format works.

Among the topics discussed during the presentations were the advances of geothermal energy in Mexico, emerging technologies and new exploration techniques, policies to incentivize geothermal projects, as well as economic and social considerations when developing geothermal power generation and direct use projects.

Recognition of a pioneer: Pathé Award

During the congress, the Pathé Award (Premio Pathé) was given to Dr. Aída López Hernández , in recognition of her outstanding career in the field of Mexican geothermal energy. This award is given annually to a person with at least 15 years of relevant contributions to the sector, highlighting their impact, merits and contributions to geothermal energy in Mexico.

On April 24, after the second day of technical sessions, the XXXII Ordinary General Assembly of the AGM was held, in which the new Board of Directors was elected for the period 2026–2028.

The new members of the Board of Directors are:

  • President: Dr. Héctor Miguel Aviña Jiménez (UNAM)
  • Vice President: Eng. Ana Melva Garciadiego Martínez (CFE)
  • Secretary: Dr. Rodrigo Alarcón Flores (UNAM)
  • Treasurer: Dr. Cecilia Rodríguez Gómez (ENERYOU)

Field trip to Los Humeros

The congress concluded on April 25 with a technical visit to the Los Humeros geothermal power plant , located in the state of Puebla. A group of 35 participants from the Congress toured the field. Operated by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), the Los Humeros geothermal field has the highest reservoir temperature among all the fields in the country and is considered the third most important geothermal field in Mexico.

The Los Humeros geothermal power plant has an installed capacity of 95 MWe and a net annual electricity generation of more than 255 GWh in 2025. It supplies more than 116,000 households, thus helping to reduce about 193,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

Also highlighted was the reception and support of the technical staff and authorities of the CFE and the Los Humeros Residence towards the participants of the congress.

Acknowledgments

The Mexican Geothermal Association expresses its gratitude to sponsors, strategic partners, attendees, and the entire Mexican geothermal community, whose participation made this meeting possible.
