The drilling of a deep geothermal well in Zyrardow, Poland has been completed, bringing the town one step closer to a planned geothermal heating network.

The drilling of a geothermal well in the town of Zyrardów in Poland has been completed, with initial results supporting the proposal for geothermal heating. With this, the local government is pushing ahead with plans for a geothermal heating plant and other recreational uses.

The geothermal well in Zyrardów was drilled to a depth of 2680 meters, accessing a geothermal resource with a temperature of 70 °C and supporting a flowrate of approximately 160 m3 per hour. The well is located within the coal yard of municipal company PEC Zyrardów.

Geothermal drilling in Zyrardow started in January 2024. The project, officially called “Construction of an exploration and appraisal well for thermal waters Zyrardów GT-1 in the town of Zyrardów” was co-financed by a PLN 19.8-million subsidy from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management under the first round of the “Making thermal waters available in Poland.”

The local government has announced that they intend to apply for further subsidies to support the development of geothermal facilities in Zyrardow. “Keep your fingers crossed for further work in this area. We will certainly not rest on our laurels. Together with the entire team, we are working on further applications to obtain external subsidies for the development of Zyrardów geothermal technology,” said Lucjan Krzysztof Chrzanowski, the Mayor of Zyrardów.
