Tomato producer invests in new geothermal greenhouse in Afyonkarahisar, Türkiye
Afyon Domates is expanding their geothermal greenhouse footprint in Afyonkarahisar, Türkiye, with the target of building a 100,000 m² facility.
Afyon Domates Mad. San. ve Tic. Ltd. Sti. has announced plans to establish a geothermal-heated greenhouse facility in the Çatalçesme area of Bayramgazi Village, located in the central district of Afyonkarahisar, Türkiye. The greenhouse will be heated using hot water obtained from the company’s geothermal wells with S:51 operating license.
With a target of building a total of 100,000 square meters of enclosed space, the project plans to produce approximately 5000 tones of tomatoes annually using soilless farming methods.
Geothermal energy will support increased yield volume as it enables year-round production in greenhouse and reduces the impact of seasonal fluctuations. Moreover, greenhouse heated with geothermal energy benefit from high product quality and low disease risk by maintaining the optimal conditions needed by plants.
The company currently holds the geothermal operating license for 110 hectares in Bayramgazi, where a 50-decare greenhouse is supplied with heat from three 1000-meter deep geothermal wells. The new investment in Afyonkarahisar is expected to be an important example of how to utilize geothermal resources in agricultural production in the region. The province is also the site of one of the biggest geothermal greenhouse facilities in Europe.
