Teverra has signed an agreement with Earth Energy Explorer to advance resource assessment of the Melilla Geothermal Project in Spain.

Subsurface solutions provide Teverra has announced a partnership with Earth Energy Explorer, a Spanish geothermal energy developer, to support the development of the Melilla Geothermal Project in the Spanish autonomous city of Melilla.

Under the collaboration, Earth Energy Explorer serves as the project developer, while Teverra will provide technical support, including subsurface characterization, resource assessment, risk-reduction planning, and technical advisory services to support geothermal exploration and development.

Located on the North African coast and bordering the Mediterranean Sea, the region surrounding Melilla provide the geologic setting and subsurface heat conditions for potential geothermal utilization, creating an opportunity to evaluate a local, reliable, and low-carbon energy resource that can serve both power and heating/cooling needs.

In 2022, the geothermal exploration license for the Melilla site was granted to Melilla Geothermal Energy, a company owned by Earth Energy Explorer. The project was then selected as one of 13 projects to receive grants under a funding aid from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO). The feasibility study of the Melilla geothermal site received a subsidy aid of EUR 6 million.

“We are excited to partner with Earth Energy Explorers on the Melilla Geothermal Project,” said Randal Wichuk, CEO of Teverra. “Geothermal presents a powerful opportunity to deliver secure and dispatchable baseload power while occupying minimal land and supporting grid stability. Our team is proud to support this important initiative through advanced subsurface analysis and de-risking approaches that improve predictability and success across the project lifecycle.”

“We are pleased to collaborate with Teverra as our consulting partner,” said Carlos Diaz, Partner & Technical Director of Earth Energy Explorers. “Teverra brings deep technical expertise in subsurface geomechanics and geothermal development. Their support strengthens our ability to systematically evaluate the resource, reduce drilling and development risk, and accelerate the pathway toward a successful geothermal project in Melilla.”
