Szczecin, Poland signs contract for geothermal exploration drilling
A contract has been signed with UOS Drilling for exploration geothermal drilling, expected by mid-2026, in the city of Szczecin in Poland.
The city of Szczecin in Poland has signed a contract for exploration geothermal drilling with Polish company UOS Drilling SA following a tender announced a few months ago. Drilling is expected to start by mid-2026, as the company needs five to six months to prepare the drilling site. The drilling operations is expected to take about four months.
The planned geothermal well at Dabska Street is expected to reach a depth of 2000 meters, where waters at 70-75 °C supporting flowrates of up to 200 m3 per hour are anticipated based on preliminary studies. Multiconsult Polska Sp. z o.o. had previously been selected to provide supervision and oversight on the drilling operations. The firm will also be in charge of conducting laboratory tests and preparing hydrological documentation to summarize the exploratory drilling.
Szczecin was one of the territories that were selected to receive funding by Poland’s Ministry of Climate and Environment thru the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOSiGW) for geothermal heating projects, as announced back in 2023. The NFOSiGW will thus provide PLN 12.9 million in funding for the project, with the drilling contract already costing PLN 15.1 million.
“We are embarking on an investment that is crucial to Szczecin’s future energy self-sufficiency. We hope that geothermal water will become another stable heat source, allowing us to diversify supplies, ensure their continuity, and influence heat price control – which is extremely important for residents,” said Deputy Mayor Anna Szotkowska.
“If the parameters are confirmed as expected, geothermal energy could cover as much as 15-20 percent of Szczecin’s heating needs. This is a first, but very important, step.”
