Planegg, Germany to build pipeline to connect with geothermal heat supply from Pullach
The municipality of Planegg in Bavaria, Germany will soon be supplied with geothermal heating from the long-standing geothermal facility of Pullach.
The municipality of Planegg in Bavaria, Germany has entered into a partnership to receive geothermal heat from the nearby Pullach municipality. The partnership was announced by Mayor Hermann Nafziger, following two years of negotiations, meetings, and consultations with experts.
As Nafziger explains, the decision to partner with Pullach was driven by Pullach’s long-standing experience with geothermal energy, primarily through operator Innovative Energie für Pullach GmbH (IEP). Indeed, the geothermal heating facility of Pullach, which has been operating since 2005, is considered one of the most pioneering projects of its kind in Germany. The heating plant has a current capacity of 16 MWth, drawing thermal waters from the Malm karst formation at about 3400 meters depth.
The final details of the partnership will be determined during the signing of the contract, scheduled to happen in the coming spring. Helmut Mangold, Managing Director of IEP, also indicated plans of integrating Neuried and Martinsried, as they are along route from Pullach to Planegg. Connecting additional municipalities can help make the scheme more economical.
The Mayor assures that the residents of Planegg will be involved through meetings and information sessions before the signing of the final partnership agreement.
Planegg has already allocated EUR 12 million for the project. Nafziger states that he is aware that this may not be enough to cover the costs of building a 9-kilometer network from Pullach to Planegg. However, Nafziger gave his assurance, stating that Planegg is an “economically strong municipality and will not have debt in the coming years.”
The Mayor added the the new heating network will be owned by Planegg, and that the municipality will not have to drill its own wells. The existing combined heat and power plants in Planegg can then be integrated into the new network without any problems.
Over the past years, IEP has been doing construction work to expand the capacity and coverage of geothermal heating in Pullach. Aside from continuous work on expanding the heating network, the company had completed the construction of a new Pullach North energy center and is constructing the drilling site for a new Pullach South deep geothermal project.
