Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in France taps Arverne to strengthen geothermal development
Arverne and Terra Energies will be partnering on the financing, development, and management of geothermal projects in the Region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France.
The Region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine in France, through regional investment tool Terra Energies, has signed a partnership agreement with the Arverne Group to jointly develop and finance geothermal projects in the region. The agreement was signed between by Mathieu Davril, director of Terra Energies, and Pierre Brossollet, president and founder of Arverne, in the presence of Guillaume Riou, Vice-President of the Regional Council of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
Collaborating throughout the development process
As a geothermal player, Arverne will be responsible for identifying market and resource potential for geothermal development in the relevant territories, drawing on extensive knowledge of the subsurface in the Region. The company will conduct feasibility studies which will be presented to local authorities, and will provide technical management and financing for projects until completion.
Terra Energies will serve to facilitate connections between Arverne and local authorities interested in geothermal projects. It will also act as a trusted third party and will make funds available to invest alongside Arverne once projects have been authorized.
Currently, the project partners are already in advanced discussions with around ten local authorities spread across six departments in the Region. By 2029, the partnership aims to create at least 10 investment vehicles, corresponding to a total investment of EUR 200 million and 500 GWh of annual thermal energy production.
Geothermal as a key component in energy transition
According to its Neo Terra roadmap, Nouvelle-Aquitaine is a targeting a 45% contribution from renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030. Among the priority areas is the development of a renewable heat sector and of heat networks connected to neighborhoods and industries.
In late 2024, the Region published a regional action plan for geothermal energy development that established a target of 3500 GWh of geothermal energy output by 2030. Such a transition would prevent the emissions of 4600 million tons of CO2 per year.
To realize these ambitions, the Region is mobilizing a range of tools including subsidies for innovative projects, targeted calls for projects, and strengthened territorial dialogue. In this context, Terra Energies plays an important role as an investment fund dedicated to the development and financing of renewable energies.
By 2029, the fund will have mobilized EUR 18 million in investments and supported over EUR 600 million in projects. By the end of 2025, it had already financed 32 projects and supported around 10 others.
