At a factory visit with GREEN Chemicals in Türkiye, we discussed chemical management in geothermal fields, GEO-Treat® solutions, and digital monitoring systems.

Chemical management plays a critical role in production performance and equipment lifespan in geothermal projects. GREEN Chemicals®, a company that has been active for many years in numerous geothermal fields in Türkiye, offers solutions in both local and global markets with its GEO-Treat® product family and field-focused technical service approach.

As part of a factory visit done by our Turkish platform, JeotermalHaberler, we met with Engin Helvac?, Coordinator of GREEN Chemicals, and discussed the chemical problems encountered in the process from drilling to production, the temperature-based product approach, and the contributions of digital monitoring systems to the sector.

GREEN Chemicals has been actively working in numerous geothermal fields in Türkiye for many years. Based on your field experience, what are the most common chemical-related problems encountered in the process from drilling to production, and at what stages do these problems directly affect project performance?

The most common chemical-related problems in geothermal projects are structural incompatibilities in the mud used during drilling, and silica and calcite scaling and corrosion during the production phase. These problems directly and negatively impact well potential, electricity generation losses, and equipment lifespan. Failure to properly manage chemical problems in the early stages leads to production losses and unplanned shutdowns. Therefore, it is critical to address the entire process, from production to re-injection, from an integrated chemical perspective.

Of course, every operation will encounter problems and difficulties, but with the right product design, i.e., R&D efforts, and the right technical service, solutions are always found. At GREEN Chemicals® , our philosophy is to offer solutions to all our customers with a partnership approach and to stand by them. For us, our customer’s facility is our facility, and our goal is to operate it in the best possible way.

GEO-Treat® products are classified according to different temperature ranges and can operate up to 300°C. How does this temperature-based approach provide your company with an operational advantage on a global scale?

The temperature-based classification of GEO-Treat® products enables us to offer targeted and stable solutions for varying environments. This approach creates significant advantages in terms of dosage optimization, reduced chemical consumption, and operational reliability, while improving product performance. All our products undergo corrosion, stability, durability, and degradation testing by our quality unit before being launched on the market. Having the technical service capability and product range to meet all conditions in the international market is a source of confidence for both us and our customers.

Considering your experience in international fields, what do you think are the most common mistakes in chemical management in geothermal plants?

The most common mistakes are insufficient analysis of field chemistry, a one-size-fits-all approach, and neglecting preventive rather than reactive chemical management. Furthermore, short-term cost-focused choices can lead to long-term production losses and equipment replacements.

Our international experience clearly shows that successful geothermal companies view chemical management as an integral part of their operations, and that transparent and close collaboration with chemical suppliers leads to more successful results. At this point, adapting to variable field conditions at the right time and taking swift action is crucial. We are continuing our efforts to incorporate technology more into our work. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you the good news that we will soon be bringing to give a new perspective to the geothermal sector.

How is digital monitoring and dosage control in chemical management truly changing the field?

Digital monitoring and dosage control transform chemical management from a guesswork-based approach into a measurable and traceable one. Real-time data prevents dosage errors, detects sudden chemical changes early, and minimizes risks in the field. These systems both increase operational continuity and contribute to sustainable production. We can also say that they enable businesses to use the products they purchase more efficiently.

How does GREEN Chemicals’ field experience gained in Türkiye contribute to geothermal projects in Indonesia, the Philippines, Africa, and Europe today?

Türkiye is a very strong field laboratory in terms of geothermal energy, possessing diverse reservoir types. The experience we have gained here has enabled us to transfer the solutions we have developed for high-silica fields, complex scaling problems, and challenging production conditions to global projects.

Today, we are creating value in many fields from Indonesia to Africa with solutions tested and proven in Türkiye. We are also able to help our valuable customers in our country even more by bringing the experience we have gained abroad to them. We have been working intensively on preventing stibnite precipitation, a global problem, for some time.

We will present our solution in this area to the geothermal sector in the first half of 2026. As a global player in the geothermal sector, we will continue to offer our highest-performing products with the best technical service to the geothermal sector.
