Geothermal heating and cooling project kicked off for Izmir Institute of High Technology, Turkey
An agreement was signed between GMK Energy and YEVDES Consortium for the geothermal energy and heating and cooling project of the European Union supported ?YTE Campus under the leadership of GIZ.
Under the leadership of German development agency GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) a contract has been signed for consultancy and service provision on a feasilbility report on a planned geothermal heating and cooling project at the Izmir Institute of High Technology (IYTE) campus. The contract is part of the scope of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Technical Assistance Project (YEVDES) for Municipalities and Universities supported by the European Union (EU). The contract was signed between GMK Energy and YEVDES Consortium for the preparation and project designs.
With YEVDES and Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources stakeholders of the project are the EU Delegation to Turkey, Turkey Union of Municipalities, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit of (GIZ) GmbH (Project Coordinator), Institute for Resource Efficiency and Energy Strategies-IREES (Germany), Fraunhofer ISI (Germany) and Eptisa (Spain), Life Energy and Obermeyer (Germany).
Heating and cooling the ?YTE campus with geothermal energy was chosen as the only geothermal energy project among 80 renewable energy projects supported by YEVDES financed by the EU. Feasibility studies, market research, heating and cooling project designs and technical documents will be prepared by GMK Energy Expert Engineers within the scope of this project; The geothermal resource required for the heating and cooling of the buildings will be obtained from the Gülbahce Geothermal Operation license, which also includes the ?YTE campus and belongs to ?YTE.
GMK Energy Experts, ?YTE Vice Rector Prof.Dr. They visited Alper BABA and held the project opening meeting.
Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency for Municipal and University Technical Assistance Project (YEVDES) ‘s main objective of Municipalities in Turkey is to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy in universities and research institutions. With the implementation of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, mainly by reducing fossil fuel consumption and transmission losses and to improve the overall energy system will help Turkey to reach the energy policy objectives. Implementation of local projects will increase public awareness as municipalities and universities have a great influence on local communities. In addition, transferring knowledge by increasing R&D activities and developing local technologies will positively affect the energy security of countries and increase the added value of the studies.
Results expected from YEVDES can be classified in the following categories:
- Increasing the capacity of municipalities and universities depending on renewable energy and energy efficiency applications
- Encouraging and contributing to energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in municipalities and university campuses
- Supporting R&D applications for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects
Mr. Zoran Morjav and Mr. Ege Akdag, one of the technical team of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the executive director of the YEVDES project, visited GMK Energy in its Aydin office and a project progress meeting was held.
This study will be an exemplary project for the heating and cooling of a university campus by using geothermal energy.
