Exploration contract awarded for Potsdam geothermal project
Local utility EWP has awarded UGS a contract for exploration planning in Potsdam, Germany, advancing the city’s geothermal heating ambitions.
Energie und Wasser Potsdam (EWP) has awarded UGS the contract to carry out the exploration concept and tendering work for a planned geothermal project in Potsdam. The contract includes preparation of the geological model, seismic data review, location assessment, and the tender package for the first deep exploration well.
The project is part of Potsdam’s broader strategy to expand local, renewable heat supply options. Geothermal energy is seen as a long-term, baseload source that can support municipal decarbonisation goals. EWP already has successfully developed drilled at a pilot site in an area for a new business and service development with up to 750 apartments. We reported on the successful start of operation earlier this year.
Scope of the contracted work
UGS will prepare an integrated subsurface assessment that will guide the design of exploration drilling. According to the company, key elements include:
- Updating the geological model of the Potsdam area
- Evaluating available seismic and structural data
- Assessing potential drilling sites
- Preparing the tender documents for a deep geothermal exploration well
- Supporting EWP through the procurement phase
In its announcement, UGS stated that it will work closely with municipal authorities and stakeholders to ensure planning aligns with the city’s heat transition objectives.
A representative from UGS said the project reflects increasing municipal interest in geothermal energy as a stable and scalable heating option for Germany.
Next steps for Potsdam
Once the exploration concept and tender are completed, EWP intends to proceed with the drilling of the first deep well. Results from this initial phase will determine the viability and possible design of a future geothermal heating plant for the city.
Germany has seen a growing number of municipal heating projects move into the planning or drilling phase in recent years, with Potsdam now among the cities exploring geothermal resources to secure long-term, renewable heat supply.
