Drilling has started for the first geothermal in the town of Koluszki, Poland, with is planned to be used for a thermal bath and, potentially, district heating.

Drilling has started for the first geothermal well (Koluszki GT-1) in the town of Koluszki in Poland, with the initial development plan of using it for recreational or medicinal purposes. According to the drilling contract with ALGEO, all the drilling work is scheduled to be completed by February 2026.

Plans for geothermal baths in Koluszki had already been announced back in 2023, although district heating was also being considered. Based on studies by the Polish Geological Survey, the potential geothermal resource in the site has a temperature of 42 °C. The well being drilled now is targeting a depth of 1450 meters, into the Lower Jurrasic strata. Geologist Dr. Bogdan Nada expects that that temperature at this depth will have a temperature of at least 40 °C, but does not rule out that a warmer resource can be found.

The cost of the drilling is PLN 12 million. Koluszki was one of the communes selected for funding by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOSiGW) in late 2024, thus providing them a grant of PLN 10.6 million for geothermal exploration.

“The work is progressing faster than expected, and it’s possible we’ll even finish it ahead of schedule. The drilling rig we’re using comes from Canada – it’s proven equipment that allows for precise drilling,” said Zbigniew Der?gowski, from the project contractor.

If the exploration well confirms the geologists’ findings, the hot water can be used for a thermal pool and may even supply heating to residential buildings, schools, and other public buildings.
