Drilling of the Banska PGP-7 well in Banska in Podhale, Poland is almost at completion as the region aims to increase geothermal use for district heating.

The drilling of the geothermal production well Banska PGP-7 in the village of Banska Nizna in Podhale, Poland is now reaching completion.  The well has reached a depth of 3915 meters mMD / 3595 meters TVD against a target depth of 4000 meters.

According to Geotermia Podhalanska, final analysis is ongoing to determine if drilling will be terminated at the current depth. The next step would be to do performance tests on the well, which is scheduled to begin at the turn of April and May 2026.

While the final parameters are yet to be determine, the company assures that the initial assumption of 90 °C for the reservoir temperature still holds.

Drilling of the Banska PGP-7 well is part of the Polska Geotermia Plus program, which aims to increase the use of geothermal resources for heating in Poland. The project has received funding support of PLN 52 million (approx. USD 14.3 million) from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. The full project, which includes the installation of heat exchangers, construction of a cooling tower, and construction of heating networks and connections has an estimated total cost of PLN 88 million.

It is initially assumed that the well will be connected to the district heating system by Q4 2026. Supplying the thermal waters to the thermal baths under construction in Zakopane is also being considered. However, all these outcomes are contingent on the results of the performance tests.

Banska is also the site of the Banska PGP-4 well, which had been drilled to a depth of 6103 meters in 2025. Another well, the PGP-8 injection well, is planned to be drilled to 5000 meters.
