The contract has been signed for exploration drilling for geothermal resources in Wloclawek, Poland with funding from a national program.

The City of Wloclawek in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship of Poland has signed a contract with UOS Drilling for the drilling of the Wloclawek GT-1 geothermal exploration and appraisal well. Preparatory work is expected to start soon and the contract has a total work duration of 18 months.

The exploration well will be drilled to a target depth of 2700 meters at the site of the Municipal Heat and Power Company (Miejskie Przedsiebiorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej / MPEC). The goal for the well is to verify that thermal waters exist in Wloclawek, and to characterize the thermal waters according to temperature, salinity, and mineralization.

If the drilling and well testing results are positive, the city aims to drilling a second well and construct a geothermal heating plant. Ultimately, the city aspires to diversify its energy sources for heating and phase out coal burning in the future.

Wloclawek was one of seven territories selected to receive funding for geothermal test drilling by the Ministry of Climate and Environment of Poland back in 2024, as ThinkGeoEnergy reported. According to the city, the funding from the “Sharing Thermal Waters in Poland” program will fully finance the exploration drilling, wit the city only paying for VAT.

Strong government support for geothermal in Poland has created a flurry of drilling activities in the country, with drilling contracts just recently signed in Nysa and Szczecin. In October 2025, the tenth geothermal heating plant in Poland officially started operations in Konin.
