GDC mobilizes rigs for drilling in Suswa geothermal field in Kenya
Exploration drilling in the Suswa geothermal field in Kenya is expected to start soon following GDC's mobilization of rigs from Menengai.
The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) has started the mobilization of drilling rigs to the Suswa geothermal field in Kenya. This is a milestone for GDC as it starts exploration drilling operations in its third operation field following Menengai and Baringo-Silali.
According to a prior release from the company, the long-term plan is to develop the Suswa geothermal field in stages with four power plant units, each with a capacity of 50 MW, thus harnessing its total 200 MW resource potential. In 2024, GDC entered into a joint development agreement with Indonesia’s PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy for a drilling campaign and technical study of the Suswa field.
“This marks a defining moment for GDC, moving Suswa from potential to proof. It signals our growth, confidence, and readiness to deliver the next geothermal frontier,” commented GDC Ag. MD & CEO Mr. Stephen Busieney.
“We take this as a worthy challenge. It’s a privilege to be the people breaking new frontiers. The team is ready. We have always been. We are not going to disappoint. Support us,” added General Manager for Drilling and Infrastructure, Eng. Ruben Ngosi, acknowledging the volume of work that lies ahead for GDC.
GDC has been responsible for the steam field development and management of the Menengai steam field, which is now nearing the initial target of 105-MW installed capacity developed through three different Independent Power Producers. In 2020, the company kicked off exploration drilling work at the Baringo-Silali site with stellar results reported through the years.
Through their work in the early phase of geothermal project development, GDC is playing a vital role in de-risking prospects and attracting investment to drive forward the growth of the geothermal sector in Kenya.
