Zanskar partners with CC Power to locate new geothermal resources in California
Through the GEODE agreement, CC Power and its CCAs can support development and procure power from the greenfield geothermal projects of Zanskar in California.
Geothermal exploration and development company Zanskar and California Community Power (CC Power) have signed a a Geothermal Exploration, Offtake and Development Engagement (GEODE) Agreement aimed at locating and developing new utility-scale geothermal resources across California.
CC Power is a joint powers authority representing nine California CCAs interested in promoting better and more effective geothermal growth in the state. The agreement with Zanskar is one of three such agreements that the group was signed recently. The others are with XGS Energy (which ThinkGeoEnergy had reported on) and with Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure, which focuses on a project adjacent to the Coso geothermal site in Inyo County.
Zanskar is described as the first AI-native geothermal energy company, having developed a prospecting toolkit and AI prediction engine that has so far demonstrated success in the Pumpernickel and Big Blind geothermal projects, both in Nevada. With this approach, the company aims to locate new geothermal sites in California, thus extending the reach of the company’s geothermal pipeline.
Through the GEODE agreement, CC Power and its CCA members will have the opportunity to support the development of Zanskar’s greenfield geothermal projects and procure power from them.
“All over the country, we’re seeing unprecedented demand for reliable, baseload power. California is no exception, with growing pressure on the grid driven by rapid electrification and aging power infrastructure,” said Ryan McGraw, Chief Development Officer at Zanskar. “California has made a clear goal to be powered by 100% clean energy by 2045, and Zanskar can help deliver.”
“The GEODE Agreement with Zanskar allows CC Power and our members to thoughtfully build a relationship with a geothermal developer who is advancing innovative technologies for unlocking incremental geothermal capacity within California that supports local reliability, jobs, and investment,” added Alexander Morris, General Manager of CC Power.
