Turboden to deliver ORC systems for Phase II of Cape Station geothermal project in Utah
Turboden will be delivering 180 MWe of ORC power plant equipment for Phase II of the Cape Station geothermal power project of Fervo Energy in Utah.
Turboden America LLC, a subsidiary of Turboden S.p.A, has announced that it has been awarded the contract to supply equipment for three Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) units, each with a gross capacity of 60 MWe, for Phase II of the Cape Station geothermal project in Utah by Fervo Energy.
This announcement follows the deliver of 120 MWe of ORC equipment for Phase I of the same project, as awarded to Turboden back in 2024. These units are now approaching commissioning and are progressing towards a target Commercial Operation Date (COD) by 2026. The Phase II engineering and procurement of the ORC equipment, including Turboden proprietary turbines and control system, will be delivered and commissioned by 2028.
With the delivery of three Gen 2 units, Turboden units will generate 300 MWe of power at the Cape Station site. The project is a milestone towards the large-scale deployment of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) in the United States. With 500 MW of geothermal energy in development, Cape Station is set to become one of the world’s largest and most advanced geothermal generation sites, showcasing the scalability of EGS and the strength of international collaboration in clean energy innovation.
Just about a month ago, Fervo Energy announced the award of a contract to Baker Hughes for the design and delivery of five 60-MW ORC units, also for Phase II of Cape Station. According a previous investment announcement by the company, Phase I of Cape Station will deliver 100 MWe of capacity, while Phase II will deliver an additional 400 MW by 2028. The full Cape Station development has received permitting approval for up to 2 GW of capacity.
“We are honored to deepen our collaboration with Fervo Energy and contribute to the next chapter of Cape Station,” said Paolo Bertuzzi, CEO of Turboden.
“This new order further validates the reliability and scalability of our ORC technology and reflects the strength of our partnership with Fervo Energy innext generation geothermal. With Turboden America LLC now fully operational, we are well-positioned to support large-scale projects and foster closer collaboration with our U.S. partners.”
In support of its growing presence in North America, Turboden America LLC has been fully operational since October 2024.
“Phase II marks another leap forward in our mission to unlock geothermal’s full potential,” added Tim Latimer, CEO and co-founder of Fervo Energy. “Turboden’s proven expertise and innovative systems are key to delivering on our promise of reliable and affordable power.”
