TOYO Engineering has been given the approval of JOGMEC to do a feasibility study on the use of coaxial closed-loop geothermal technology in Japan.

The proposal submitted by Toyo Engineering Corporation (TOYO) for a “Feasibility Study on Coaxial Double-Pipe Type ‘Closed-Loop Geothermal Power Generation Technology’ in Japan” has been selected by the Japan Energy and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC).

This study will assess the technical feasibility of implementing closed-loop technology using the coaxial double-pipe system, a next-generation geothermal power generation technology, in Japan, with the premise of making maximum use of existing geothermal resources.

The closed-loop technology does not require groundwater or geothermal reservoirs, and thus can be deployed in a wider variety of geological conditions as long as a heat source exists. The system works by generating electricity by injecting a heat medium (such as water) from above ground, passing through the underground double-pipe system to recover heat, and then returning it to the surface.

Earlier this year, TOYO entered into a collaboration agreement with US-based technology company GreenFire Energy for the joint deployment of closed-loop geothermal solutions in the Asia-Pacific region.

TOYO’s proposal was submitted in response to the third public call for proposals for a feasibility study on the use of next-generation geothermal technologies. The Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry (METI) has taken the lead in accelerating the development of next-generation geothermal technologies in the country, with the goal of such a system being deployed by the early 2030s.

Closed-loop geothermal solutions, enhanced geothermal systems, and supercritical geothermal are all under consideration in this initiative.

TOYO also has an established presence in the geothermal industry of Indonesia, mostly through EPC services provided by subsidiary Inti Karya Persada Tehnik (IKPT). In 2024, TOYO entered into a joint study agreement with PT Medco Power to identify opportunities for further geothermal development in Indonesia.
