Sinopec has officially launched their geothermal heating service for this year, setting a record-high capacity of 126 million square meters.

The China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) has officially launched its geothermal heating services for this year’s winter, covering a record-high 126 million square meters. This is equivalent to the heating supply for 1.2 million households across 70 cities and 11 municipalities in China.

China has held the dominant leadership position globally in geothermal heating, posting steady capacity growth numbers over the past years. Earlier this year, the company reported that their geothermal heating capacity had already doubled since 2020. With this, Sinopec has become the country’s largest medium-deep geothermal energy development and utilization enterprise.

Sinopec has done plenty of work in preparing for the current heating season, including upgrading equipment and facilities and and utilizing intelligent technologies. The new intelligent production and operation platform and heating operation guidance system, coupled with a 24-hour service hotline, helps in adjusting the heating load and ensuring the comfort of residents.

Sinopec has achieved full geothermal heating coverage in Xiongxian County, Hebei Province, creating the “Xiongxian Model,” a technology that can be replicated and its experience scalable.  The company has successfully drilled China’s first deep geothermal scientific exploration well exceeding 5,000 meters, the Fushen-1 well in Hainan.
