Non-tax state revenues from Indonesia's geothermal sector set a historic high of about USD 209 million, further establishing its role in the national economy.

The geothermal sector in Indonesia has generated a non-tax state revenue of IDR 3.5 trillion (approx. USD 209 million), a historic high for one of the top geothermal countries in the world. This figure is significantly higher from the range of IDR 1.6 trillion to 2.1 trillion of the previous years as announced by Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE).

“The non-tax state revenue from geothermal energy is extraordinary, and this is the highest we’ve ever achieved,” said Eniya. “This increase also confirms that the geothermal sector can become a significant source of revenue while supporting national energy stability.”

Eniya further explained that initiative to utilize binary power generation systems contributed to this revenue increase, allowing geothermal power facilities to operate more efficiently and increase operating capacities without drilling more wells.

Moreover, the total capacity addition for the past few months has been higher than usual. The Director cited a figure of 110 MW of additional capacity in recent months which can be ascribed to the start of operations of Lumut Balai Unit 2, Ijen, the retrofit of Salak, and Sorik Marapi Unit 5.

Cascading economic impacts of geothermal

Geothermal already plays a role in stabilizing power prices and reducing reliance on fossil fuels for power generation. Its direct economic benefits are also apparent in creating jobs in the fields of construction, operations, and maintenance.

However, the non-tax state revenues generated by the geothermal sector also provide additional funding for the government’s development and national priority programs. The record-setting revenues set by the sector for the past year is clear evidence that geothermal can be a driving force for the national economy.
