Hwan Tai, Wistron groups to cooperate on geothermal project in Taiwan
A new partnership between Hwan Tai and Wistron combines construction and technology know-how to jointly develop a geothermal project in Taiwan.
Wistron Green Energy Holdings has announced the signing of a cooperation agreement with Hwan Tai Geothermal Holdings to jointly invest on and develop a geothermal project in Taiwan. The two parties will initially focus their development efforts in Taitung County, a region of great geothermal interest which has already been the site of extensive studies in the past.
Wistron Green Energy Holdings is a subsidiary of Wistron Corporation, an electronics manufacturer that has invested substantially into renewable energy ventures. On the other hand, Hwan Tai Geothermal Holdings is a subsidiary of cement manufacturer and construction company Hwan Tai Cement. It is also a member of the Taiwan Geothermal Industry Association, which was founded in mid-2025.
In attendance at the signing ceremony were Huang Chun-tung, Director of Wistron Green Energy, and Lee Shih-pin, Chairman of Hwan Tai Cement and Chairman of the Taiwan Geothermal Industry Association. Chien Kun-liang from the Ministry of Economic Affairs was also present, conveying support of the Taiwanese government.
Each party brings complementary strengths to the partnership. Hwan Tai offers experience in geothermal project development, while Wistron aims to optimize the exploration process through advanced data analytics. The partnership also endeavors to introduce advanced local and international exploration and drilling technologies. The partners are optimistic that the partnership between the construction and technology industries will create a new momentum for the geothermal sector of Taiwan.
The venture is in line with the goal of the Wistron Group to incorporate more renewable energies into their operations. As indicated in the company’s 2024 Sustainability Report, Wistron has achieved a renewable energy utilization rate of more than 74% across their sites globally. This was accomplished through a combination of self-generation, renewable energy purchase agreements, and the purchase of renewable energy certificates.
The geothermal sector of Taiwan is still at its nascent stage, but the country holds immense potential because of its geological setting. On March 2026, Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs will again be holding the Taiwan International Geothermal Conference as a platform to foster cooperation and knowledge sharing for the advancement of geothermal.
