First Gen signs 47-MW geothermal power supply agreement to Philippine retail chain company
First Gen, through EDC, will be supplying 47 MW of geothermal power to the retail and hotel facilities operated by the Waltermart Group in the Philippines.
Renewable energy developer and operator First Gen has signed an agreement to supply 47 MW of geothermal power to the malls, retail facilities, and hotels operated by WM Shopping Center Management, Inc.
Geothermal power will be supplied from the Unified Leyte Geothermal Power Plant, owned and operated by Energy Development Corporation (EDC), a subsidiary of First Gen. Based on the agreement, First Gen will supply geothermal power to 47 WalterMart malls across Metro Manila, central and southern Luzon, as well as hotels in Pasay City and Global City Manila.
The shift to geothermal power is part of a wider effort to incorporate more renewable energy into the operations of the retail company. The company has also installed solar facilities across several WalterMart malls in Luzon, also in partnership with First Gen.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to First Gen for being our trusted partner in advancing sustainability through RE. The commitment to clean power enables our malls to operate responsibly and efficiently, reducing our carbon footprint while creating a greener future for the communities we serve,” said Abraham Uypeckcuat, Chairman of WM Shopping Center Management Inc.
“Together, we are proving that progress and sustainability can go hand in hand.”
“Our collaboration with WalterMart began in 2019 with solar facility installations. Since then, the WalterMart team has made long-term commitments towards sustainability. We are happy to support the WalterMart journey to power their community malls with 100% RE,” added First Gen President Giles Puno.
EDC had recently announced plans to decommission the 129-MW Upper Mahiao geothemral power plant, part of the Unified Leyte geothermal power plant complex, citing that it has reached the end of its operational lifespan. The company has active exploration efforts in greenfield sites, including at the Amacan site in Mindanao and in several prospect areas in Indonesia.
