First Gen has signed a 22-MW geothermal power offtake agreement with a property company in the Philippines to power its local chain of shopping malls.

The First Gen Group (First Gen) has signed a deal to supply over 22 MW of geothermal power to eight shopping malls and supermarkets in the Philippines owned by property giant Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC), owned by the Gokongwei group.

Under the agreement, geothermal power will be supplied to commercial facilities across five provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao regions. Electricity will be sourced from the Unified Leyte geothermal power facilities for the malls in Visayas, while the Mindanao operations will be powered by the Mt. Apo geothermal power plant.

As explained by RLC President and CEO Mybelle V. Aragon-GoBi, the deal aligns with the goal of the Gokongwei Group to achieve net-zero status by 2050. It also helps provide renewable energy to their facilities even during peak demand and reduces their exposure to electricity price volatility, particularly amid ongoing geopolitical issues. RLC already operates with 10-15% of its total power from renewables.

Through the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), larger power consumers in the Philippines may opt to source their power supply from a renewable energy provider. This allows businesses to benefit from the price stability of renewable power while providing long-term and secure offtake agreements to renewable energy developers and operators. Since its inception in 2008, the option has been made available to consumers with a minimum monthly power demand of 100 kW. This threshold had recently been lowered to 50 kW, making the program available to more industry players.

First Gen has taken great advantage of this program and has signed many private offtake agreements through the years. In just the past few months, the company has signed a 47-MW power supply deal with a retail chain and hotel company, and another 11-MW agreement with the Philippines’ largest fast food restaurant chain. The company had recently celebrated the 50th year anniversary of its geothermal operations in the Philippines.
