PT Star Energy Geothermal has completed surface and drilling exploration work at the Hamiding site in Maluku, Indonesia, validating a 60-MW potential capacity.

PT Barito Renewables Energy (BREN), through subsidiary PT Star Energy Geothermal Indonesia, has completed an exploration campaign at the Gunung Hamiding geothermal prospect in the North Halmahera Regency in Indonesia. The results of the study validate the potential for 55-60 MW of geothermal power generation capacity at the site.

In late 2025, PT Star Energy Geothermal announced the start of an exploration drilling campaign at the Hamiding prospect, as ThinkGeoEnergy reported. Based on previous statements, the company is targeting around 50 MW of initial development at the site, with a total planned capacity of 300 MW.

The Hamiding PSPE was awarded to Star Energy following a competitive selection process back in 2016. The exploration program includes geological, geochemical, geophysical, and geotechnical surveys, followed by civil works and exploratory drilling.

“This achievement represents a significant milestone in our company’s gradual development toward the construction of an initial 50 MW geothermal power plant in the Halmahera region. It reflects our commitment to providing clean and reliable energy while supporting Indonesia’s transition to a sustainable energy future,” said Barito Renewables President Director Hendra Soetjipto Tan.

As part of the development plan for the site, PT Star Energy Geothermal has also built supporting infrastructure including 7.7 kilometers of access routes to existing routes, 13.8 kilometers of new roads, three bridges, one well pad.

As Henda stated, the results of the exploration campaign will now provide the basis for further development of the geothermal resource at the Hamiding prospect. Several potential geothermal sites in the Halmahera region in North Maluku have drawn interest, but none so far have progressed to full operations.

A 5-MW geothermal power plant had been planned for construction in Songa-Wayaua, but had not progressed since the initial announcement in 2017. Meanwhile, the Telaga Ranu WKP had just recently been awarded to PT Ormat Geothermal Indonesia, while the tender for drilling services for the Jailolo site was announced a few weeks back.
