The AFPG and ATEE have formed a new working group dedicating to promoting geothermal energy to decarbonize industrial processes in France.
The French Association of Geothermal Professionals (AFPG) and the Technical Association for Energy and the Environment (ATEE) have created a working group dedicated to promoting the use of geothermal energy in industrial applications. The working group will be led by the ATEE’S Energy Efficiency group, in close coordinate with AFPG, which will be contributing its technical expertise in geothermal energy.
The working group aims to:
- Promote the exchange of information and experiences between actors involved in geothermal energy in industry;
- Contribute to the dissemination and improvement of technical references relating to integration of geothermal energy in industrial processes;
- Encourage the upskilling of design offices and technical stakeholders; and
- Identify the technical and organizational levers enabling better consideration of geothermal energy in companies’ energy management strategies.
The working group will be officially launched on 16 April 2026.
Following preparatory work that will be done during the first half of 2026, the working group aims to develop a 2026 roadmap that will be consolidated by the end of the summer. The roadmap will focus on communication actions, the provision of technical and economic feedback, the production of standardized Energy Savings Certificates (CEE) operation sheets for industrial sectors, and support for specific operations.
Through this initiative, the ATEE and AFPG intend to contribute to creating a space for technical dialogue and cooperation in the service of decarbonizing industrial activities through the use of geothermal energy.
France has decades of experience in geothermal heating, with the Île-de-France region hosting some of the most extensive applications of geothermal for space heating in the world. In the industrial space, geothermal heat is already being supplied to greenhouses and fish farming facilities. More recently, drilling operations have started for a project that aims to supply geothermal heat to the aircraft engine manufacturing facility of Safran in Seine-et-Marne.
