Geothermal power plant in Dominica enters advanced stages of commissioning

The geothermal power plant in Dominica has started supplying power to the transmission system as it nears the completion of the commissioning phase.
The 10-MW geothermal power plant in Laudat in Dominica has entered the advanced stages of commissioning and has started supplying electricity to the grid. The update was announced by the Dominica Electricity Services (DOMLEC), following the start of commissioning in December 2025 and about 15 years of protracted development work.
In the announcement, DOMLEC stated that key sections of the new 33 kV transmission systems have been tested and energized. This includes critical equipment at Fond Colé and Laudat, and the underground transmission line connecting both sites. The generators at the plant have also been successfully started and loaded.
As DOMLEC General Manager Dwayne Cenac noted, DOMLEC had previously only operated at a maximum voltage of 11 kV.
Since 30 March, geothermal power has been supplied via the new transmission system. DOMLEC cautions that the generators may still be turned off or adjusted as the testing and commissioning process is not yet complete. Thus, there may still be power outages over the coming days.
Cenac added that the goal is to get the facility to supply at the maximum 10-MW capacity by the end of the week. The commissioning process will continue towards the end of April. Over the next weeks, the operations of the plant are expected to be more stable and prolonged.
